studio-grow-alameda
Studio Abound in Alameda

Wow, can the time pass slowly inside the business firm on a rainy day! Here are 10 things for East Bay parents to consider for amusement:

  1. Tinkering projection. Consult a kids' science or cooking book for ideas and then make a list of supplies. Try Dad's Volume of Crawly Science Experiments or Bean Appetit for inspiration. To get out of the house for a change of scenery, caput to one of your large local grocery stores to gather supplies. No patience for mess in your own house, merely become to Gluey Art Lab on University Ave. and utilize their stuff!
  2. Go to the movies. With onsite cafes, The New Parkway in Oakland and The Cerrito Speakeasy in El Cerrito both make information technology possible to feed your kids dinner and watch a movie at the same fourth dimension.
  3. Tumbling – Check our calendar to see if any of the local open up gym hours are happening (Cal Gilt Bears in Berkeley; Caput Over Heels in Emeryville; Blood-red's Tumbling in Alameda all offer them) and if not, consider making the bulldoze to Sky Loftier Sports in Concord or Rockin Spring in Fremont or Dublin for some bouncing fourth dimension. Fifty-fifty Pump Information technology Up in Oakland offers Pop In Playtime where you pay by the hour.
  4. Toddling around – Demand something to do earlier naptime? Habitot is open until 12:xxx every day for little ones, and and then is Studio Grow in Berkeley and Alameda (pictured). We Rock The Spectrum in Berkeley is platonic for preschoolers who demand an outing after naptime every bit they are open until seven pm!
  5. Pace away from the screen – Large kids can get their video game fix at Playland Not-At-The-Beach in El Cerrito with old schoolhouse pinball and carnival games. Open weekends but.
  6. Indoor sports. Batting cages expect you in San Leandro (Triple Play USA) and Richmond (The Wheelhouse). Ready the pitch as boring as 25 MPH and then that everyone can go far on the fun. Albany Bowl and Alameda Bowl are fun for multi-generational crowds. Endeavour something new at Fatty Shafts Archery in Benecia.
  7. Miniature golf. SubPar is an entirely indoor mini-golf course in Alameda.
  8. Larn something. The scientific discipline museums, Chabot in Oakland and Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley are super kid-friendly, as is Sulphur Creek Nature Center in Hayward ($2 for a toddler class!). Berkeley Art Museum (BAM) and Oakland Museum of California are beautiful spaces to explore together and offer hands-on areas for piddling ones to feel engaged.

What are your go-to activities for rainy days?

Must-run into holiday lights: Alameda'south Christmas Tree Lane

For years I'd heard that the all-time place to run across holiday lights in the East Bay is in Alameda.  I knew that Santa Claus would exist sitting on the median, and I knew that every house on the block would be decorated. Somehow I just wasn't sure it would exist worth the drive. Well, information technology is.

It'due south non only the lights that make the 3200 cake of Thompson Ave feel and so special; it'south the people milling about, the Girl Scouts selling treats, and the sweet and nostalgic displays of decorations.

christmas_tree_lane_24.jpg

Plan to park and walk the length of the cake and back again. My 6-year sometime sat on Santa's lap in the median of the street, available to anyone who wants to stand in line. Donation suggested; take your ain motion-picture show; Santa hours are half dozen:30 to eight:00 through December 23rd, weather permitting.

Neighborhood children gave out small processed canes. We spied and then many favorite characters, from an oversized Grinch to Yukon Cornelius and the Abominable Snow Monster. These are bootleg wooden cut-outs that you cannot buy at Target, people. One house has a light bear witness timed to music with a Nightmare earlier Christmas theme. Another house is completely covered with pinkish, um, shingles?

We were lucky to exist standing by equally the Black Knight Motorbike Gild drove through, each cycle decked out with lights and holly.

Heather Farm Park and Playground in Walnut Creek
The unique characteristic of the Heather Farm playground in Walnut Creek is a prepare of artificial-turf covered mounds that children can slide down on sheets of cardboard. The park is a great destination for all ages. From a stroller-friendly walk around the pond to a well-placed bench for grandparents to sit, information technology has a lot to offering, and as information technology's a newly opened playground, it'southward all in tip-top condition.

Heather Farm Park and Playground in Walnut Creek

When I visited with a mom friend, we had with united states of america a iii-twelvemonth old who enjoyed all the climbing and sliding opportunities for her age group; a pair of seven-yr one-time girls who conquered all the tunneled curvy slides and the snowboarding opportunities offered by the hills; and ten-year old boys who shot baskets at the next courts.

Heather Farm Park and Playground in Walnut CreekLater a couple of hours on the playground, my friend and I pb the kids to scooter a few laps around the lake, and finally visited the botanical gardens, which they found ho-hum, simply might be better appreciated by toddlers who desire to touch every plant as they walk past.

Golden Gate Park Children's Playground & Carousel

At that place are so many great things to do in San Francisco's Gilt Gate Park – take a  stroll, explore the Cal University of Sciences, visit the Conservatory of Flowers, or sip tea at the Japanese Tea Garden. Merely have y'all ever been to the children's park inside Gilded Gate Park? Information technology's fantastic!

SF Children's Koret Playground

The children'south park is situated near Golden Gate Park's Southeast corner and surrounded by lush green grass, so pack a blanket. Both my three and (virtually walking) 10-month old went crazy exploring. Notable things included – a gigantic rope climbing structure, a climbing wall shaped similar a wave, concrete slides, AND a carousel. Also, at that place's a Annie's Hot-Dog and Pretzels stand if yous go hungry. I can't speak for it, just if I let him, I'm sure my toddler would take eaten that up. Hit up the park on a day y'all're already exploring in Golden Gate, or venture across the bridge but to get. Just note – it'due south rather large and there's no fencing to keep wandering children within – which means I may accept lost my 3-year-sometime more than in one case. Oops.

SF Children's Koret Playground, concrete slide

Some tips if yous go:

  • Carousel Rides: $2/adults, $i/6-12 years, under 5 gratuitous with paying developed
  • Make sure to check the carousel schedule earlier going to ensure no melt-downs ensue.
  • Parking: Bulldoze around and examination your luck – information technology's San Francisco, duh! But really, we didn't have trouble finding a costless spot on the street and walking a fleck.

Make sure to grab some hecka cheap fresh flowers and a sweet irish potato pie to snack on at home. Frog Park is ane of my favorite destinations for older toddlers and preschoolers (only I thoroughly recommend against it if you have kids that are runners or you're also minding a baby, it'southward just not worth the stress to play at a playground with no gate). The play structure is large and different from what you notice at every other playground in town. The dog park makes for interesting canine-watching. For a late lunch or coincidental dinner, try Cactus Taqueria for inexpensive and delicious Mexican eats.
